ARE YOU BEING CHARGED MORE FOR YOUR

FRUIT & VEG?

Did you know when you buy your Fruit & Veg in plastic packaging from the supermarket it is contributing to Australia being the second-highest generator of single-use plastic waste per person after Singapore, according to the Minderoo Foundation.

If you are saying.. not me I buy the unpackaged fruit & veg?

Well you are being charged more for your good deeds!

In the SMH article today Cucow said "higher prices for loose produce were widespread."“We had surveys returned across all of the four major chains and it happened in all of them.”“Given supermarkets are not paying for the cost of packaging on these products, it is concerning that environmentally conscious consumers are expected to pay more, particularly during a cost of living crisis.”

If you want value for money and the freshest produce, time to head to the markets.. fresh, economical produce is worth the trip!

REVAMP YOUR LIVINGROOM
ON A SHOESTRING
Finally, it is the last weeks of winter and I must admit I am counting down the days until spring bursts onto the scene. I really can’t wait for longer, lighter days, blossoms and colour.

However, August need not be colourless and grim when you can give your rooms an effortless makeover on a budget.

Gone are the days when designer inspiration cost a bundle and the thought of making over your living area or bedroom made your piggybank frown. With just a little planning and of course, knowing the right place to shop, you can have all of the colour and energy of spring to enliven any room in your home.

I absolutely love designer pieces. I love it even more when I can get that expensive Luxe look for less. There are so many fabulous homeware stores to shop, both online and locally there is no excuse to let the end-of-winter blues get you down. So let’s check out some of my favourite ways to add some warmth and energy to your home.

LAST MINUTE GIFT IDEAS FROM THE COMFORT OF YOUR SOFA

So it is Christmas Eve day and you still don't know what to get that difficult to buy for Brother-in-law or you just got the call your girlfriend is dropping by and you are sure she is going to give you a present and you haven't shopped for her - Yikes!

Gifts you can Print to the rescue (or SMS, email, Facebook or Whatsapp).

Benefits

Take advantage of purchasing eGift cards or experiences by instantly and electronically sending the gift to your gift recipient.  This is better than buying a plastic gift card because you can always reprint an email code if you lose the piece of paper and now with the new legislation, most gift cards and vouchers have a 3 year expiry or in the case of www.noexpiry.com just what it says ... no expiry.

I don't know which to buy

If you hesitate to use gift cards because you don't know which one to buy.  My advice is get something universal.  At www.giftcardstore.com.au you can buy a virtual Mastercard which can be used anywhere Mastercard/Visa is accepted.

Perhaps a voucher for an experience from www.RedBalloon.com.au is the ticket.  Your giftee can choose from any of the experiences on their site and use the voucher towards the price of a larger, more decadent experience.

Where do you source these fabulous, in-the-nick-of-time gifts?

Here are my recommendations

OUTSMART THE SUPERMARKETS

Join Jo on Youtube for inside secrets to

Aussies are busy enough, without having to think about how to stretch our dollars further while still achieving delicious, healthy dinners.

The temptation is to buy a jar or package of processed ingredients from the supermarket for a quick and easy meal.

As supermarket prices increase, Aussies are looking for new ways to feed the family without blowing the budget.

These are my top tips for how you can outsmart the supermarket and avoid a budget blowout.

Avoid the Supermarket spending traps
From the layout of the store to the music being played, Supermarkets are psychologically designed to encourage you into buying things you don’t need. Keep this in mind when heading into the store. Stick to your list and make sure you’re aware of the temptations in every aisle and at checkout.

Hot Tip: Never visit a supermarket on an empty stomach – otherwise you’ll be caught out with a trolley full of snacks, lollies and drinks you don’t need and your grocery budget blown out.

Avoid the temptation
Because of these temptations, every time you step into a supermarket you’re bound to walk out with more ingredients than you had planned. This means if you’re doing multiple shops each week, you’re spending more than you would by only making one visit to the supermarket. In fact, according to data from Finder, those who shop for groceries twice a week tend to spend more per week than those who opt for weekly visits ($187 and $162 respectively). To avoid a budget blow out, stick to one weekly shop and save yourself both money and time.

Hot tip: If you find it hard to stick to the plan, shop online. It is an easy way to stick to your list and avoid all of the supermarket instore spending traps.

Avoid the packaged fruit and veg
One of the biggest supermarket traps is falling for the pre-packaged fruit and vegetables that convince you to buy more than you need. They look neat and attractive in their packages however you buy more than you need and throw the rest away. Try your best to buy the exact amount for your recipe, opting for two carrots or a handful of spinach rather than a whole bag. Not only will this help you save money, but you’ll also save on food waste.

Hot Tip: One of my recent discoveries is the benefits of using a meal kit delivery services. Selecting the meals and then receiving a 4 step recipe, with the perfectly pre-portioned ingredients to ensure you get exactly what you pay for and it all ends up on your plate and not in the rubbish.

Regardless of prices increasing, by being smarter in our approach to shopping, we can still achieve delicious meals, eat healthy, avoid the waste and keep a little something in our budget to spoil ourselves.

SHOPPING APPS - ARE YOU BANKING THE BUCKS?

There are some tried and tested tips to save money on groceries that are guaranteed to deliver significant savings however many families fail to implement them and continue to struggle to balance their grocery budget. What are the tips, tools and what are the hacks to achieve savings without the angst?

COSTCO GROWING IN THE AUSSIE MARKET BUT DO YOU REALLY BAG A BARGAIN?

Costco retail result eclipse Myer, David Jones, Officeworks and Target in annual sales.

News on the Annual sales results identified Warehouse membership store Costco has stepped up as a real player in the Aussie retail landscape with Annual sales of $3.6bn up 9.6 %

So why are Aussies flocking to Costco and are they really getting bang for their buck or are they just buying giant sizes of the same stuff?
Photo by Marques Thomas on Unsplash

Bulk Buying at Costco
The answer most Costco shoppers give when asked why they shop the big store is the savings by bulk buying.  But are you really getting the best prices on everything at Costco?

There is no doubt, the roast chickens are regularly priced below the supermarket roast chickens and Costco Fuel always seeks to be the best local price in suburbs where they sell fuel.  With a little savvy shopping you soon learn that some items are great value but there are many that are not.

How to know you are getting the best prices at Costco

The number one rule of shopping club is to know your unit prices and if you don't, check the prices and compare.

If you are instore how to you compare?
For groceries, use a shopping app either Woolworths or Coles to find the same product and compare the unit price.

If you are shopping books or other variety items using the eBay app as a measure of the average/discounted price is also a terrific reference.

For electrical items, cameras etc sites like Shopbot.com.au is a wonderful resource for finding the best offers online for a specific make and model of electrical goods.

Once you have confirmed you are getting a great buy, pop the goodies in the giant trolley and enjoy the Costco Treasure Hunt experience.

For More on how I comparison shop and apps and tools I use, check out @TheSavvyShopaholic Youtube channel.

CHANGING SEASONS CAN BE TOUGH ON OUR SKIN SO ROLL AWAY THE SIGNS

I first saw the jade roller when doing a gift guide session at Ch9 in Sydney.  Sonia Kruger was saying how good they were.
I recently gave one a test drive.  They really are wonderful.  The Luxe brand has a vibration feature too so promotes circulation and encourage skin cell rejuvenation, to stimulate the lymphatic system helping to combat puffiness and water retention.
On a hot day or after the night before, 10 mins in the fridge and the cool jade applies your facial serums or oils, encouraging better absorption as well as skin health, improved skin tone and a radiant complexion. ohh and those dark circles and puffiness are kept at bay.

An excellent gift!

ISO COOKING OBSESSION

Have you spent some time at home cruising your cook books and dedicating some of your time to cooking?  Me too.

The appliance I have been making the most of (beside the coffee machine) is my Philips pasta maker.

Its not just about the spaghetti!  Think noodle soups, stirfry noodles and yep even sweet biscuits and a parmesan shortbread or two ...

Shout out to my fave new recipe site Cooks Republic with a stunning Hot Mushroom Dan Dan recipe using the Philips Pasta Maker pictured with delicious spelt wheat bronze glowing noodles!

NO FLIES ON ECOMIST

I have been using Ecomist automatic insect control for years.  It is my secret weapon.
The Ecomist Natural Insect Killer uses natural pyrethrins derived from the Chrysanthemum Daisy, sourced from Tasmania and East Africa and manufactured in New Zealand.
It releases a spray or two every 8 minutes.  The pyrethrins drive the bugs crazy and they flee.  So if you want a home that is silverfish free, cockroach free, spider free, ant free etc My cats don't even have fleas.  I live across the road from a lake and the mosquites are managed.  Learn more
